How to Humanely Evict Wildlife
Raccoons play an important role in the environment. They are an important part of nature’s balance, such as killing and destroying hornets' nests which help keep our honey bees safe.
We strongly oppose trapping/releasing elsewhere as this increases the spread of disease, creates a 'vaccum effect' where additional animals come in to fill the void, and almost always results in death for relocated animals, especially mothers consumed with grief as they search for their babies. The best deterrent is prevention. Secure trash cans, repair points of entry (once it is confirmed babies have been moved), pick up outdoor pet food at night, and move bird feeders inside.
Wildlife have several dens within a mile of their current location, so humane eviction is much more effective. The goal is to make their current dwelling as uncomfortable and inhospitable as possible. By doing so, you drive the animal out safely of its own accord. Our top recommendations for encouraging wildlife to relocate babies on their own are:
-
Essential Oil: Spray peppermint oil around the nest site or area where you would like to discourage entry. Our rescue uses this around our dumpsters for years and it continues to deter wildlife. Spray every two to three days.
-
Vinegar: Soak old rags or socks with vinegar and place in the area where you don’t want wildlife. Re-soak every two days.
-
Repels All: Can be purchased from Walmart, Lowe’s, Home Depot, and most farm supply stores. This is granulated ammonia, which is an irritant, so be careful to only spread around the point of entry far away from any nests, as this could damage babies' developing lungs.
-
Sonic Boxes: These cost approximately $35.00 and can be purchased from Lowe’s or Home Depot. To use, place in the direction of entry point to deter animals.
-
Amber Strobe Lights: Can be purchased online or at Party City stores. Wild animals will not tolerate flashing lights for long. Place as close to the nest as possible.
-
Portable Radio: Turn up the volume and tune it to talk radio throughout the day and night. Most mothers want to nurse in a dark, quiet, safe environment, so the more inhospitable you can make it, the better.
NOTE: Never use mothballs as they are highly flammable and extremely toxic.
If you have a nursing mama in your attic, please bear in mind that it will take her some time to relocate her entire family. Consider she could have up to eight babies, and her backup nest could be a mile or more away, so please give her space and time (we normally estimate three to five days to completely relocate).
Once mom and babies are 100% confirmed to be moved, be sure to repair any points on entry to prevent future visitors.

If you do not talk to them, you will not know them.
And what you do not know, you will fear.
And what one fears, one destroys.”

"Wildlife rehab is so much more than simply cuddling fluffy babies. It means zero sleep, because fragile orphans must be fed every two hours around the clock. They are crying, stressed, and most likely missing their Mom and siblings. Rehab involves fielding 100+ calls and messages per day from a frustrated public that doesn’t understand we are volunteers and already out of cage space, so even though we want desperately to help you, we can not take even one more animal. We don't take these decisions lightly. We toss and turn all night, wishing so desperately we had space, crying ourselves to sleep, wondering what became of her/him. It’s non-stop cleaning of blood, feces, fly strike, maggots, and vomit. Wildlife rehab means doing everything perfectly, by the book for the baby who just came in suffering from seizures, having them thrive and flourish, only to wake up the next day to find them deceased from unknown causes, such as internal injuries. It’s never taking sick days, vacations, or having long, relaxing weekends, because we're too worried about all the kiddos depending on us.
But it’s also the most rewarding, fulfilling life we could ever dream of, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!”
